Romney Sticks his Foot in it Over Taxes
Mitt Romney's Presidential campaign nearly came to a shuddering halt this week when a secret video recording emerged showing the Republican candidate effectively describing 47 per cent of Americans as tax-dodging "victims", dependant on the Government.
In a hastily convened press conference, the Republican presidential candidate confirmed the authenticity of the video and opted against disavowing the views expressed in it. He said only that the case was not "elegantly stated" and that he had "spoken off the cuff".Quite how that response will go down remains to be seen but with less than two months until the biggest date of his life, his campaign managers will no doubt be wondering if it's too late to pull a Pakatan and jump ship...
The video recording first saw him denigrating those who receive benefits from the Government before going on to suggest that they could expect little such sympathy or help if he became President.
"My job is not to worry about those people," he said, talking of the '47 per cent of Americans [that] pay no income tax'.
Romney tends to avoid the press as much as possible and it is a sign of the seriousness of the situation that he had to make an impromptu statement.
Unfortunately for Romney, it plays right into the portrait that Obama campaigners are painting – that Romney, an extremely wealthy individual, is out of touch with working and middle class Americans.
It also means that the issue of how much he himself paid in taxes will resurface, with calls for him to release his tax returns beyond the two impressively low yielding years he has volunteered.
In his own words, Romney pays all that he needs to and not a penny more. Unless it's to shrewd accountants.
Kanye Knows how to Charm
Everyone's favourite Kanye West is making headlines again – this time for his generosity, or crass spending power – depending how you look at it. He's set aside $1million for his partner, Kim Kardashian's, 32nd birthday celebrations next month.
Kanye has also been in regular contact with her family of late to make sure that nothing is left to chance.
"Kim has been really down about turning 32 and having two failed marriages behind her and no children, so he wants to make this extra-special," a source said.
"Kanye has never been shy of splashing out on those he loves, but this time he's pulling out all the stops with presents."
So far he's organised a trip to Pine Cay, a private island in the Turks and Caicos group, with a group of her friends as part of the celebrations.
A chef from a five-star hotel to cook for them privately each night will of course supplement their trip.
Kanye has also been splashing out on tens of thousands of ringgits worth of designer clothes and jewellery.
A made-to-order special edition Prada bag, lined in a "KK" print, a pink diamond bracelet and a couture Chanel dress should cement his place in her good books for life.
Still, now that even The Choice knows about it, we suspect the element of surprise has somewhat waned for poor Kim.
