Reuters Kills George Soros; John Terry Snaps at Benitez

Reuters Prematurely Publishes Obituary for George Soros

Reuters, the news agency, has since 1851 tried to be the first with the scoop. From being the first in Europe to report the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, to carrying the first interviews with those who conquered Mount Everest, its network of journalists is known for being quick to react.

Yet a prominent headline on Monday was perhaps a little too quick to appear. Reuters not only announced the death of George Soros, but they provided the financier with a scathing and substantial 1,222 word obituary.

Anwar Ibrahim’s old friend was described as “predatory” and “an enigma wrapped in intellect, contradiction and money. The obituary described the financier as one “who argued paradoxically for years against the same sort of free-wheeling capitalism that made him billions.”

Clearly this was no rough draft but something that had been stewing in the agency pot for some time – there was even dummy text for the place and time of his eventual demise.

Almost as soon as it had appeared, the article was removed from the website, with the Reuters Twitter feed apologising for the error – but it wasn’t before screen grabs had been taken and shared countless times on social media.

John Terry Bites Back at Benitez

After sitting in the dugout for weeks on end, John Terry has finally lashed out at Chelsea’s interim manager Rafa Benitez.

The Spanish coach had complained that Terry’s lack of fitness was the reason for him not being fielded in several key games – but the 32-year-old now claims he has been ready to play for weeks.

“I don’t know where these suggestions have come from. I can definitely play twice a week or even three games if necessary,” Terry claimed.

“I’m fit, I’m training every day and I have been for the last three months, so I just want to set that record straight.”

The 32-year-old centre-half has been on the bench 13 times since returning from a knee injury on January 12.

Benitez has said the question is simply which team members can win games. Well, it is certainly the week for winnable candidates.
